Building a Design System that Speaks AI

From design tokens to AI-ready skill files

Experience Principles

AI-Ready Naming

Token and component names follow consistent conventions that Claude for Design can interpret without disambiguation, enabling usable first-pass concepts in a single prompt.

One System, Two Platforms

Every component works across the Bubble supply platform and the Shopify demand template without forks, eliminating duplicated design effort.

Speed Where It Counts

Informational and marketing pages go from brief to deliverable without full review cycles — freeing time for testing and iteration on the flows that actually matter.

Documented to Be Machine-Readable

The design system lives as structured .md skill files alongside Figma components — so AI tools have direct access to design context, naming conventions, and writing guidelines without prompt engineering each time.

TEAM

Solo Designer

Challenge

As the sole designer on a two-sided product — supply on Bubble, demand on Shopify — design and concept review cycles were slow. Non-critical informational pages required the same full design process as key screens. The team needed a way to create and review concepts faster without sacrificing quality on what mattered most.

Role

Lead designer and sole design contributor. Responsible for brand guidelines, design system architecture, token naming, component build in Figma, and AI tool integration strategy.

Solution

Built brand guidelines and a Figma component library from scratch using variables, with token naming optimised for AI compatibility. The system is documented as structured .md skill files — giving AI tools like Claude for Design readable access to design context, writing guidelines, and component logic. This bridges the gap between what AI already knows (how to code) and what it doesn't (our specific design decisions). Non-critical pages go from brief to usable concept in a single prompt. Components extend cross-channel to CRM and social.
